I would definitely recommend a straight watchthrough of Buffy, if you can ever manage it. (Though the part where Buffy visited Angel? Actually not all that important in BtVS - it's barely mentioned - though there are some OMG AWESOME (and heartbreaking) moments of crossover through series four and five. Sometimes it's hard to pick them out unless you're watching the episodes in a 1:1 order, the way they were aired, or unless you've watched one series over and over so you can recognize the parallels in the other off the top of your head, but... yes. Awesomeness.)
