So the Children of Time Awards voting closes today, and though I haven't been able to read nearly as much as I'd like, I figured I'd toss up a list of what I'm voting for, mostly because there's a lot of fic I'd like to rec anyway. And because I'm a dork and sometimes like to have a record of these things.
New Who: Characterization: Mickey Smith: Ten Seconds by witchofthedesk
I wanted, badly, to vote for They Came to Norway to Eat Our Brains (which you should absolutely read). However, that's really more of an ensemble fic, and Rose and Jack are more the focus than Mickey. And as it's the characterization category... I actually have to cast my vote for "Ten Seconds". It's a Mickey/Jackie fic (that could be gen) set right after the end of "World War III", and it's sweet and utterly believable and gets Mickey and Jackie absolutely right.
Quick note: can CoT have an ensemble category? Please? Maybe I'm just a complete sucker for a well written ensemble story, but...
New Who: Characterization: The Master: Five Things That Never Happened to the Master by trollopfop
See what happens when you don't let go? Now your sleeves are wet.
I really, really enjoyed all the fics in this category, and you can't go wrong with any of them, but this is the one that felt most like it showed all the facets of the Master, not just the mad, destructive, evil parts - though those are there too, rest assured. It's also got some really lovely imagery, and the relationship with the Doctor is perfect. I forgot how much I liked this fic until I reread it.

There were a couple others I had a hard time choosing between (and a few in this category that made me want to throw things - just a little - because the characterization is so far off my view of it), but I finally settled on this one. Just because that scene is one of the most powerful in S4, and it's well-written.

I feel bad, because I haven't gotten around to writing anything for this comm in ages, but I really, really adore it. Maybe it's just because I like to ship everyone with everyone, but this comm is fantastic, and more people should go there. And write stuff for it. Seriously. (Oddly enough, of all the odd pairings possible, about half of the stuff I've written for that comm have been your typical conventional fandom pairings that I was shocked no one had gotten to before me. Like Jack/Nine. And Jack/Ianto. ...And then you've got stuff like River/Jenny, but... still.)
Torchwood: Characterization: Gwen Cooper: Peace Attend (Our Weak Light Together) by

It's pretty. Starts off a little slow, but the ending scene is worth it - or maybe I'm just a sucker for puppypiles. Though like the Master category, you really can't go wrong voting for any of the fics here (and I'm not just saying that because one of my fics is nominated in this category).
Torchwood: Characterization: Toshiko Sato: The End is Where We Begin (Again) by

Definitely the best-written fic in this category, and the only one where the characterization of Tosh didn't make me raise my eyebrows at least once or twice. It's a lovely (mostly) preseries fic that is so not my version of canon (mostly when it comes to Suzie and Jack's team before canon), but I could still absolutely believe it. More a Jack fic than a Tosh one, really, but I'm giving it my vote anyway, because the scenes of Jack recruiting Tosh, and looking out for Tosh, are spot on.

And, if that change proves itself irrelevant, if it's just a tune up, an oil change - just bodywork - then I'm in real trouble. I'm in Uncharted territory. In those places that were once marked on maps as: Here be dragons. Dragons. Love. There's no difference, at least not from where I'm standing.
Okay, so it's the only fic in its category. Still absolutely deserves a mention, because... LOVE. So much love. It's an AU, written before Torchwood started airing, taking the form of Jack's blog after running into the Doctor again. It's got Jack's voice down, a lovely alt!Gwen (not the Gwen in canon, but I still quite liked her in her own right), and the most beautiful details (the Doctor has a star in his trainers!). Just... read it. Really. It's so worth it.

It's a recs comm for Torchwood fandom. It is a fantastic recs comm for Torchwood fandom. Seriously, these people have excellent taste. If you're looking for good Torchwood fic and don't want to be hunting through the general fic comms for ages to find something worth your time?
torchwood_house is definitely the first place I'd look.
Still reading a bit in an attempt to squeeze in a few more categories before I actually vote, though I'm spazzing about that because I DON'T KNOW WHEN THE FIFTH ENDS. ...it helps when you put dates and times and timezones on these things. Anyway.
I might edit the post to add a few more categories if I... finish reading them.
