I like the fact that you talk incessantly...
My ctrl key is not working. I mean, it is, but only when I hit it REALLY FUCKING HARD, and it's driving me crazy. I get spazzy when my keyboard doesn't work right. Also, it's hard to hit the key that hard with that finger. Rrrh. And yeah, I could probably take off the key and fix whatever's wrong, but I'm concerned that if I took the key off I would just... make it not work at all. It's happened before.
And it's been a very frustrating day, all in all. Frustrating... few days, but today especially... And then I end up all stressed out and achy and trying not to snap at things. Luckily, it's all balanced out by wonderful plot things in the Rift and the awesomeness of Rizzy, but... still. I can do with that road trip ANY DAY NOW. (Soon, soon, OMGYAY. I get to see so many of my people.)
Anyway. Have a meme or two. First, from
newredshoes:
The Rules: Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five fic-favorites you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.
The Other Rules: After each story, add a little something about what you learned about writing in the process. Or, if you didn't learn anything, add something that fits contextually with the time of writing the story.
In no particular order...
1. Lullaby for a Dead Girl - original (the only place it's posted online is heavily flocked, and it's in an anthology, but if you want it, ASK AND I WILL SHARE. Rly.)
It's probably the one thing I'm proudest of writing. I just... love it, everything about it, and it just kind of appeared as a complete story that I didn't have to poke or prod much to make it work. The characters are... themselves, and the story reminds me of The City in the year I lived there and the writing itself is pretty, which is rare and hard for me. I'm just... so pleased with this story in general.
It's nice to know I actually can write short stories. No, really. Not every original idea I get has to be a novel. (Most of them still insist on it, but shhhh...)
2. The Stories We Say - RENT - Mark/Roger
I wrote this for
rentchallenge. Pretty much entirely for
_chibidragon_ and
emilystarr1. And it was just... fantastic. New chapters, like, a couple times a week and writing it on the subway and in the hallway and seats at the Nederlander and the characterization of Mark and Roger was so different from everything I'd seen floating around in fandom pretty much ever (I'm almost certain Roger was based on Luther's Roger... I have no memory of where the Mark came from) and it was just fun to write. It was actually supposed to be a short one-off thing for one challenge, but then I had a fanclub. Small fanclub, but still.
Which just proves that stories that probably would have sputtered out and died actually get finished when I have cheerleaders. I should have a dedicated fanclub at all times.
3. Follow the Leader (Over the Cliff) and Sometimes You Hear the Bullet - Doctor Who/Torchwood - Team gen (with a hint of Tosh/Ianto and Jack/Ianto)
The first one I wrote as a Christmas fic for
chicafrom3, the second as a (too long) attempt at a story for
writerinadrawer, and I am both so proud of them. And sometimes have to resist opportunities to fling them at people and go "READ MY AWESOME FIC". ...Yeah, I'm kind of ridiculous sometimes. But anyway, FtL(OtC) was actually my first Torchwood fic and I started out so intimidated by the characters and ended up loving writing them all. And SYHtB is my personal canon for the Year that Never Was and you can't convince me it's not true.
This was just... a good fic for me to write, just coming out of Rent fandom and into Doctor Who/Torchwood. In Rent fandom, it is all about the ships. Because the show is all about the ships. I started out writing these fics meaning for them to be shippy and then I got derailed by shiny monsters and disaster and the ship kind of got kicked to one side. If you're wondering why all I write in fandom is DW/TW fic lately... that'd be why. Sorry.
4. Never Be The Same - RENT - The Man/April
I'm mostly pleased with this story because I got to grab a minor character out of the ensemble and do something with him, and it was plausible and awesome and after writing it, he became one of my favorite RENT characters. He doesn't have a NAME in canon, guys. So yes, most of my love for this story is based on adoring my own character, and feeling accomplished that I managed to make other people like him when the general reaction to him in the show is a desire to punch him in the face. ...I am slightly mortified that Luther Creek probably read it, but I try to ignore that.
The lesson here is that minor characters are so much more fun, and why didn't I catch on to that sooner?
5. And You Loved Things Just Because - Torchwood - Tosh gen
My last fic for
writerinadrawer, which won the thing for me. I stressed out so much over this, because I was getting no ideas from the prompts and was terrified that I wasn't going to be able to write anything at all (which would suck on the LAST ROUND with three people left), until the day before it was due I just decided to take something that was... tangentially inspired by the prompts but hardly obviously connected. And the voters at WIAD were quick to vote you out for not following the prompts closely enough. But having written it... oh, it was so much better than anything I could have come up with by strictly following the prompts. It's sweet and pretty and so Tosh and it just makes me smile, rereading it.
Story wins over following prompts. Every time. I need that knocked into me sometimes. Also, Tosh is ADORABLE and fun to write and more people should do it. (I should do it more, and fully intend to.)
And I don't usually tag for memes, but because I really like this one...
starletfallen,
kawaiispinel,
trollopfop,
draegonhawke, and
_chibidragon_? If you would like to do this meme, I would be so pleased.
And the other meme, which requires much less work...
Which of my RP characters do you associate me with the most? Why?
I can kind of guess for most of you, but I'd like to know anyway.

As for the meme? Mal. Always. Totally. Completely. Forever. It's an association that will never get out of my head.

And because I don't really like any other Mal players I've seen, so.

And, following that, Gwen. I know it's not exactly surprising or anything, they're very obvious. But you just write both of them so well, it's hard to imagine anyone else writing them.
Though I'll admit I miss when Jack was the one I most associated with you. Mostly because I miss your Jack. A lot.

It's Jack for me. I think it always will be, but the Doctor is a very close second.
I'll fill out that other meme once I get home tonight!

Hee. I miss Jack. A lot. (And a large part of the reason I miss him so much is that playing him against your Martha is just so much fun. But.)
