Bridges burned, fingers crossed...

Seriously, WTF. There has never been an episode of Doctor Who where I could do nothing but stare in horror. I mean, I enjoyed TINKERBELL JESUS DOCTOR, okay? (I still do, but that's a story for another day.) But... that's kind of what I ended up doing here.

I just... bad writing. BAD. WRITING. On top of some really uncomfortable gender things, and the... GIANT MECHA CYBERMAN? SERIOUSLY? How do you get AWAY with that? Rusty, the Doctor saying "Well" is not an explanation for why there is nothing about a GIANT MECHA CYBERMAN in history books.

I. JUST. WHAT.

RAAAAGE.

It's possible I'm just crotchety right now, but NO. I was so hoping he didn't end up sad and alone on the TARDIS again, so the fact that he didn't is... a plus, and there were some cute moments with the Doctor, but mostly... I so don't want to watch this episode ever again. It. Just. WHY DOES IT EXIST?

...I'm going to have to go watch some good Doctor Who later tonight to restore my faith in things.

I just stared and was entertained. I liked it because it was ridiculous. But in my book, ALL the Christmas specials blow. It's like a tradition. The Christmas specials just suck. That's how it happened. It was like "Well, hm. Interesting plos with this random guy calling himself the Doctor, it's far too good. Let's fix this with a GIANT CYBERMAN."

I have the say, mecha Cyberman made me laugh out loud.

I so wish I could have just accepted it sucking and enjoyed it, but... no. This is just... I have no words. I was going along with it for a while, and then I just hit a certain point and started ranting about how I wanted to go to Wales and take Rusty's kneecaps until he relearned how to write a story that doesn't blow. Because he used to be able to manage it. I swear he did. He's just getting more and more ridiculous as time goes on.

[identity profile] lionessvalenti.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think it has reached a point where he's run out of stuff, so, yes, it's getting ridiculous because he's grasping at plot straws. It's past time for him to not be in charge. Can that just happen now?

He should have thrown in some Daleks for good measure. That's RTD's idea of recipe for success - MORE DALEKS.

I would have preferred MOARDALEKS to more Cybermen. Sure, the Daleks are even more overdone than the Cybermen, but at least they're still entertaining. For me, anyway. I still love bitchy Daleks, though I'm so glad Moffat is unlikely to use them either. NEW MONSTERS PLZ.

[identity profile] lionessvalenti.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually a big fan of the Cybermen. However, I'd love to see new aliens foes. I get the coolness of Classic!Monsters, but the novelty has worn off. Get creative. Maybe the Daleks can actually be extinct and the Doctor gets a new OMGNEMESIS species.

It'd be nifty.

And it was actually my favorite Christmas Special. XD

Yeah, it made absolutely no sense though. Whatsoever.

That was my least favorite part.

That and fucking Rosalie sounding EXACTLY like Martha and distracting me the whole time.

Heh. My love for the Christmas specials goes in order of when they were aired. Christmas Invasion, Runaway Bride, Voyage of the Damned... and then this one. *Sigh*

And I'm still sad Martha didn't get a Christmas special, because I'm sure I would have loved that, but... oh well.

It's really disappointing too, because I've been so hopeful and excited about the specials airing between now and S5. This episode is really lowering my expectations for the others, though.

XD I think this one just rose to the top, because the Doctor stayed. It made everything else okay.

I'm sad about that, too. :/

I really hope that David Tennant stays on for one more series, because the main reason that we don't get another series sooner is because of him. So if we're waiting for him and he's only going to a few specials so far apart? Grar.

[identity profile] allfireburns.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. The fact that he stayed is definitely a step in the right direction, but I just can't forgive the rest of the episode. (Though there were a COUPLE parts I liked enough that I might just rewatch clips of those. The whistling. And the past Doctors...)

I so wish he would, but he's totally not. It's been confirmed - brand new Doctor, starting next season. Which... I'm okay with, on the one hand, because David feels it's time to move on and I'm glad he's getting out while he still enjoys the show, but on the other hand... that's MY DOCTOR. I will cry so hard.

Yes, the past Doctors made me squee so hard! :D And Morrisey's reaction to the TARDIS was brilliant. The "break my heart" line broke MY heart. I doubt I'll watch it, again, but I haven't watched any of the other Christmas Specials more than once so... it's all good in the hood.

See I thought it had been confirmed and I told my sister about it. She looked into it and said that it wasn't for certain according to the articles that she found, but I'm not sure what she found. So. >>

Oh and don't mind the Martha journal. ^^"

[identity profile] techniclybrill.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. The whole last scene was actually very well done. And the Doctor's FACE when he realized everyone was cheering for him. Like I said, it had its good points. Just... by and large, EXTREMELY disappointing.

Yeah, he announced it on a... thing (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7698539.stm), a while ago. I'm just hoping that now that The Next Doctor has aired, they'll go ahead and announce who they've cast as the ACTUAL next Doctor. I desperately want it to be someone completely out of the blue (and not Paterson Joseph - I don't mind a black Doctor AT ALL, but NOT HIM).

And just as long as you don't mind my Tosh journal. ^^

Yes! His face made my sister and I squeed so hard.

Gwah. I kind of wish he would have just died in the finale... it would have stopped that episode from failing so much and all of his companions would have been there to see it-ish. Except not cause we still get more of him, but. Hopefully it gets better. How many specials do we get, anyway? :o

I don't mind! I never mind a Tosh journal. :)

Five, I think, counting the Christmas specials at either end.

PRETTY MUCH.

[identity profile] harbek.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I find I don't particularly care about the giant cyberman. (My initial answer to this was, well, of course the wizards will go around obliviating all the muggles, and... oh... right. Wrong fandom.) I mean, it's Doctor Who. I don't expect logic. Continuity went on an extended vacation.

I watch the episodes almost entirely for the characters. Ten in particular of course, and the fact that I fell in love with David Morrissey's character almost immediately. He did a great job, too, and I feel he should be on for a recurring role. If it weren't for his randomly appearing son, I'd hope for him to join as a companion. I spent a lot of wanting Ten to just hug him, or possibly make out with him. (It might have been partly due to the outfit -- I'm a sucker for those clothes.)

(It took Steph and I just about two seconds, and we're RPing Ten/Jackson, starting where the episode left off. They just finished that Christmas dinner. Ah, shameless slash.)

How do you get AWAY with that?

My theory is that all those people died off pretty quickly, then forty-some years later Torchwood went around collecting all the evidence and burning people's diaries and such. After that only conspiracy theorists talked about it, and no one takes them seriously. Yea.

Overall, I wasn't too impressed with it either.

Nnngrrh. I can accept that, or that the Time Agency came and wiped everyone's memory of that night, but the fact that we need to come up with crazy theories to explain something like that PISSES ME OFF. Needing to come up with theories to explain minor details is one thing, but HUGE PLOT ELEMENTS?

Then, I get irrationally pissed off when people get away with bad writing on TV, because there are SO MANY PEOPLE involved that somewhere along the way, SOMEONE should have gone "Umm... question." And I know why it doesn't happen when it's an episode written by a showrunner, but it's still rage-inducing.

[identity profile] invaderwitch.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
What you said. And a lot of other elements annoyed me even more than the Cyber King. A decent (if not overly creative) setup, absolute crap follow through. It's actually annoying me more thinking back on it now than when I watched it, lol.

I'm with the camp that just expects weak Christmas specials, I just don't understand why they have to be that way.
