Question!

Okay, so. [livejournal.com profile] kawaiispinel and [livejournal.com profile] chicafrom3 reminded me of an idea I had ages ago for an obscure musical ficathon, and [livejournal.com profile] chicafrom3 wanted someone to run one, so... I figure in the next couple months I will set up a ficathon for just that purpose.

Here's the question - when do I run it? Too late for October, obviously, November is right out of the question (NaNo and all), in December it'll be competing with a lot of other ficathons... So. Poll.

(Note that I am planning to run a Chess... not ficathon, but challenge-type-thing in December on [livejournal.com profile] allsixtyfour, and take that into account. Or maybe I'll do Secret Santa in December, and the challenge in January or February... Anyway.)

[Poll #1065470]

February would probably be the best idea. In January people are going back to school and trying to get in the swing of things and by march people tend to be working on studying for something or other. February strikes me as the happy medium of the two.

Besides, March is too late and December everyone's got shit going on in one way shape or form.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I just wanted to make sure other people agree. ^^

But in December, people have some time off.

This is true. But there are a million and one ficathons running in December, plus various Secret Santa things, plus normal holiday stuff, and the people who do NaNo are trying to recover from that... December is often one of the worst times for any real writing projects for me.

I thought NaNo was in June...maybe that's just Canadian NaNo or something. I'll have to check.

Some people do a June Nano. And Nano was originally, in the first year, maybe two, in June. And this past June there was a thing like Nano called Script Frenzy. But no, official NaNoWriMo is in November.

Wow, this is almost as confusing as Chris Columbus's messed up time frame for the Rent movie!

XD Well, Nano's first year or two was mostly a group of people in Cali. And they originally did it in June. But then they moved it to November, for whatever reason. Some people can't do it in November, due to scheduling and what-not, so they do it in June instead.

And then there was a separate thing called Script Frenzy this past June that was like Nano for scripts.

I'm going with February too. Seems right. And considering that's around the time of Next to Normal's arrival on Broadway, I expect to be feeling the musical vibes quite intensely about then.

Oooh! Yes! I forgot about that. Heh. We'll have to see if Next to Normal and Feeling Electric will get to be counted as two fandoms or one, depending on how much it's changed. Yay, exciting!

[identity profile] kawaiispinel.livejournal.com 2007-10-03 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Lord, if it changes enough to warrant two fandoms... I'll either be amused or horrified. We'll have to see where that goes.

Heh. Same here. But then, I DOUBT it'll change enough to warrant two different fandoms. I mean, Chess has, like, three different PLOTS and it's still the same fandom.

"...and not a big mess like Chess, and we'll made Broadway our eternal address..."
There should be some Official Broadway Custodian who cleans up plots like Chess...(and while we're at it, how about Wicked and Lestat?)

*Giggles* In some versions of Chess, it makes sense. ...Sort of.

One of these days, I'm going to write a coherent script for Chess piecing together the various versions in some logical fashion.

[identity profile] ebonymusic.livejournal.com 2007-10-03 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally stick with London. It's the easiest.

Not when you know the intricacies of how the World Chess Championship is set up. ...Yes, Evie and I actually have researched this. We win at geek.

[identity profile] ebonymusic.livejournal.com 2007-10-04 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I tried learning chess 3 times and I just couldn't. I artistic mind has a hard time with strategy. (That's a total lie, by the way. I just didn't have the patience. I'm quite good at math.)

That research beats even me spending 25$ on Anthony Rapp's paperback and then another 25$ on the audiobook so I could hear his speaking voice. XD.

By obscure musical, you mean it doesn't have to belong to just one Fandom? It could be any?
And how obscure is obscure? What if the show made it to B'way but closed too quickly? What if it's a long standing off-Broadway show? What about very different workshop versions of now-popular shows?

[identity profile] allfireburns.livejournal.com 2007-10-03 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly what I mean is that it doesn't get a lot of fanfic. At the moment, I'm only excluding Rent, Wicked, and Spring Awakening. I'm sure something else ridiculously obvious will occur to me, but... it's more that the fandoms are obscure and not often written about than that the musicals themselves are (though musicals no one's heard of count too).

[identity profile] quinby.livejournal.com 2007-10-04 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
CAN I WRITE BARE?

*cough* In other words, I'm in whenever it is.

Then again, I might write L5Y tooooooo.

[identity profile] allfireburns.livejournal.com 2007-10-04 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I am trying to decide whether Bare counts as an obscure fandom or not. I think I'll probably rule it out, just 'cause... there is quite a bit of fic out there, if you know where to look. Whereas other musicals (like L5Y are more neglected). But I can probably be convinced otherwise, possibly.
